MOMBASA FOOD TOUR - As the heat of the day fades, Mombasaβs Old Town comes alive. Over four flavour-packed hours youβll weave through its narrow lanes and lively streets with a local tastemaker guide, stopping for 15+ tastings that locals snack on every evening. This isnβt fine dining - itβs the real food of the Swahili coast, eaten at street stalls and long-standing neighbourhood eateries.
The culinary journey begins in the historic spice market where the air hangs heavy with cloves, cardamom and cinnamon. Here youβll try seasonal tropical fruits while learning how centuries of Indian Ocean trade shaped the flavours of the city. From there itβs into the streets for humble but addictive bites - crisp beef sambusas, fried pea fritters, golden spring rolls, handfuls of Indian chevda snack mix, and smoky beef skewers grilled over hot charcoal.
The tour is mostly on foot as you wander through Old Townβs carved doors and coral-stone buildings, but at one point youβll hop aboard one of Mombasaβs iconic yellow rickshaws for a short ride between stops.
Along the way youβll pause by the waterfront for a cup of traditional Swahili kahawacoffee paired with sweet coconut ladu balls. Expect rich fish cooked in coconut with fragrant rice, followed by a Swahili-Arabian spread of slow-cooked mutton mandhi, fresh tomato kachumbari, warming mutton broth and sticky slices of Arabic nut halwa, all washed down with refreshing tamarind juice.
This is the real Mombasa beloved by locals.
Mombasaβs food scene isnβt built around restaurants, it lives in the streets. This tour takes you straight to the vendors, grills and small neighbourhood eateries where locals actually eat.
