Mombasa food tour

MOMBASA FOOD TOUR - As the heat of the day fades, Mombasa’s Old Town comes alive. Over four flavour-packed hours you’ll weave through its narrow lanes and lively streets with a local tastemaker guide, stopping for 15+ tastings that locals snack on every evening. This isn’t fine dining - it’s the real food of the Swahili coast, eaten at street stalls and long-standing neighbourhood eateries.

The culinary journey begins in the historic spice market where the air hangs heavy with cloves, cardamom and cinnamon. Here you’ll try seasonal tropical fruits while learning how centuries of Indian Ocean trade shaped the flavours of the city. From there it’s into the streets for humble but addictive bites - crisp beef sambusas, fried pea fritters, golden spring rolls, handfuls of Indian chevda snack mix, and smoky beef skewers grilled over hot charcoal.

The tour is mostly on foot as you wander through Old Town’s carved doors and coral-stone buildings, but at one point you’ll hop aboard one of Mombasa’s iconic yellow rickshaws for a short ride between stops.

Along the way you’ll pause by the waterfront for a cup of traditional Swahili kahawacoffee paired with sweet coconut ladu balls. Expect rich fish cooked in coconut with fragrant rice, followed by a Swahili-Arabian spread of slow-cooked mutton mandhi, fresh tomato kachumbari, warming mutton broth and sticky slices of Arabic nut halwa, all washed down with refreshing tamarind juice.

This is the real Mombasa beloved by locals.

Why this tour is awesome

Mombasa’s food scene isn’t built around restaurants, it lives in the streets. This tour takes you straight to the vendors, grills and small neighbourhood eateries where locals actually eat.

With 15+ tastings over four hours, you’ll experience the full spectrum of Swahili coastal food, from humble street snacks like sambusas and smoky beef skewers to rich coconut fish and slow-cooked mutton dishes.

Along the way you’ll explore the historic spice market, learn how centuries of Indian Ocean trade shaped Mombasa’s cuisine, and even hop aboard one of the city’s iconic yellow rickshaws between stops.

Led by a passionate local tastemaker guides, this small-group experience gives you an authentic look at the flavours, streets and everyday food culture that define Mombasa.
