SALVADOR FOOD TOUR - Our evening tour of Salvador explores the flavours of Bahia in the streets and local kitchens. Over four hours and 12+ tastings, you’ll move through the historic heart of the city, from the Mercado Modelo to the cobbled streets and colourful facades of Pelourinho, discovering the food traditions that define Salvador.
The tour begins at the market before riding the Elevador Lacerda, the iconic lift that links the city’s upper and lower levels. Expect a wide range of flavours and textures. You’ll start with sweet and comforting bites like bolinho de estudante, a cassava doughnut rolled in cinnamon sugar, and cocada, a traditional coconut candy. Savour different styles of Brazilian cheese bread, try tapioca flatbread filled with carne do sol and cheese, and pause for a small glass of cravinho, a clove-infused cachaça popular in Salvador’s historic centre.
As the evening unfolds, you’ll experience some of Bahia’s most iconic street foods. Watch acarajé, the famous black-eyed bean fritter of Afro-Bahian cuisine, being prepared and stuffed with rich vatapá. Snack on charcoal-grilled queijo coalho, crispy cod fritters, and the beloved Brazilian street classic coxinha.
Along the way there are refreshing pauses too, including coconut and lime juice and freshly pressed sugarcane juice.
The experience finishes with a Bahian spread near Praça João Alfredo Fontenelle. Here you’ll sit down to dishes that reflect the deeper flavours of the region: ximxim de galinha, a slow-cooked chicken stew enriched with peanuts and spices, alongside caruru okra stew, toasted cassava flour, and fried plantain.
Part street food crawl, part cultural deep dive, this tour is designed to introduce you to the layered culinary traditions of Salvador where African, Portuguese, and indigenous influences come together to create one of Brazil’s most distinctive food cultures.
Salvador’s food tells the story of the city itself. This tour takes you through markets, street stalls, and neighbourhood spots to experience the Afro-Bahian flavours that make Bahia’s cuisine so distinctive. From acarajé frying in palm oil to grilled queijo coalho and slow-cooked ximxim de galinha, you’ll taste dishes that locals grow up eating.
Along the way you’ll ride the iconic Elevador Lacerda, explore the cobbled streets of Pelourinho, and sample everything from sweet coconut candy and cassava doughnuts to clove-infused cachaça and fresh sugarcane juice.
It’s a relaxed, small-group experience designed to give you a genuine introduction to Salvador through its food.
