Jakarta food tour

JAKARTA FOOD TOUR - Jakarta doesn't ease into the evening. As office towers empty and the tropical heat begins to soften, pavements transform into open-air kitchens. Charcoal glows beneath skewers, woks roar over fierce flames, and food carts emerge from every direction to feed one of the world's largest cities. This is a capital built by traders, migrants and merchants. Chinese settlers, Sundanese farmers, Javanese cooks, Arab traders, Dutch colonists and communities from across Indonesia have all left something simmering in the pot. The result is a street food scene so vast and varied it comfortably stands alongside the great food capitals of Asia.

Over four hours and 15+ tastings, we'll travel through Jakarta's culinary heart, beginning in the historic Chinese quarter of Glodok, crossing the colonial streets of Kota Tua, before riding south into the neighbourhoods of Menteng and Central Jakarta. It's a journey through the city's history told entirely through its food.

We begin beneath the ornate gates of Kawasan Pancoran Glodok, the gateway to Jakarta's Chinatown. Chinese communities have traded here for centuries, and nowhere has influenced Jakarta's food culture more profoundly. Their noodles, dumplings, soy sauces and cooking techniques became woven into the city's identity long ago, creating dishes that today feel unmistakably Indonesian.

Our first bites come from West Java. Soft cassava is stuffed with deeply savoury oncom, a fermented soybean cake prized for its wonderfully nutty, almost smoky character, alongside crisp tapioca fritters. Nearby, we'll stop for telor gulung, Jakarta's wonderfully nostalgic street snack where delicate ribbons of egg are rolled around bamboo skewers. We'll settle into steaming bowls of tender beef meatballs swimming in a beautifully clear broth, brightened by white pepper, garlic and spoonfuls of piquant sambal.

The streets of Kota Tua tell another chapter of Jakarta's story. Once the fortified Dutch colonial capital of Batavia, today its old buildings shelter some of the city's most cherished street food. Here we'll discover kerak telor, the smoky duck egg and glutinous rice pancake that has become Jakarta's signature dish, still cooked over glowing charcoal exactly as it was generations ago. There are crispy ayam penyet crushed beneath fragrant green chillies, earthy stink beans tossed with fried aubergines, cooling glasses of sweet iced tea and wonderfully chewy cilok bandung, tapioca dumplings generously coated in rich peanut sauce.

Then we travel like Jakartans themselves. Boarding the city's commuter railway, we'll head south before hopping into a tuk tuk to weave through Menteng, one of Jakarta's grandest neighbourhoods. Waiting at the other end are some of the city's best sate, beef and chicken skewers kissed by charcoal smoke and lavishly coated with rich, silky peanut sauce. Alongside comes comforting soto madura, a deeply aromatic beef soup whose fragrant broth has quietly restored hungry Indonesians for generations.

The evening still has room for a few final classics. Wok-fried nasi goreng arrives smoky from the pan, carrying the unmistakable caramelised edge known locally as wok hei. Then pause to watch the mini clouds of steam escape fragrant kue putu, pandan rice cakes hiding molten palm sugar, while glossy green klepon burst with warm syrup.

Many visitors know Jakarta only through its traffic. We'd rather introduce you through its street food. Between Glodok and Menteng lies one of Asia's great culinary adventures, where every cart, every charcoal grill and every family recipe tells the story of a city that's never stopped eating.

Why this tour is awesome

Jakarta is one of Asia's great street food cities, yet most visitors barely scratch the surface. Over 15 tastings, you'll journey from the lantern-lined streets of Glodok and the colonial heart of Kota Tua to the chaotic avenues of Menteng, eating your way through the neighbourhoods that built the capital's remarkable food culture.

Expect smoky sate cooked over glowing charcoal, Jakarta's iconic kerak telor, steaming bowls of beef soup, fiery street snacks, wok-fried nasi goreng and nostalgic Indonesian sweets. Along the way, you'll ride the commuter rail like a local, uncover the Chinese, Javanese and Sundanese influences that shaped the city's cuisine, and discover why Jakarta's street food scene deserves to stand alongside Bangkok, Singapore and Hong Kong as one of Asia's very best.
