Alexandria food tour

ALEXANDRIA FOOD TOUR - Alexandria has always looked outwards. Founded by Alexander the Great over 2,300 years ago, this Mediterranean port became one of the ancient world's greatest trading hubs, where Greek, Egyptian, Ottoman and Levantine influences arrived not just on ships, but on dinner tables.

Our four-hour feast explores the Alexandria that locals know best, weaving through bustling markets, family-run bakeries, historic cafΓ©s and neighbourhood institutions over 14+ tastings. Forget hotel buffets. This is lunch, Alexandrian style.

Like any proper food feast in Alex, we'll begin with warm baladi blistered bread straight from the oven, with green olives, sharp pickled vegetables, rich Egyptian cream, local cheeses, sticky black molasses, wild honey, earthy tahini and sweet dates. It's a a meal built for sharing, grazing.

From there we'll wander deeper into the old city, calling on specialists who have spent decades perfecting a single craft. One shop devotes itself almost entirely to crumbly halawa, where toasted sesame becomes something altogether more luxurious. Another serves silky Egyptian rice pudding, while nearby fragrant semolina cakes dusted with cinnamon emerge fresh from the oven. Even the city's seafood makes an appearance, with crisp fried whitebait, a reminder that the Mediterranean is never far away in Alexandria.

Next comes one of Egypt's great street food masterpieces. We'll watch skilled bakers prepare hawawshi, generously stuffing flatbread with minced beef, herbs and warming spices before sliding it into fiercely hot ovens. The result is crisp, smoky and manages to feel both everyday and utterly irresistible.

We'll slow the pace inside an almost century-old cafΓ© where little seems to have changed except the customers. Over glasses of ruby-red iced hibiscus tea, we'll watch locals argue cheerfully over games of dominoes, a ritual that's unfolded here every day for generations. In Alexandria, cafΓ©s have always been as much about conversation as caffeine.

Then the table fills. Tender beef liver tucked into pillowy bread, smoky lamb kofta, peppers and tomatoes, vibrant pickled beetroot and all the accompaniments that transform a meal into a proper Alexandrian spread.

We'll finish the only way Alex would allow - with om ali Alexandria's wonderfully indulgent answer to bread and butter pudding, and sweet couscous with nuts soaked in warm milk.

Most come to Alexandria searching for its ancient history, but forget that much of it can be found on Alexandria's tables.
