ALEXANDRIA FOOD TOUR - Founded by Alexander the Great, this Mediterranean crossroads became a meeting point for Greeks, Egyptians, Levantines, Ottomans and countless traders who arrived with new ideas, new ingredients and bigger appetites. More than two thousand years later, the city's greatest stories are still told around the table.
Our four-hour evening feast ventures beyond the Corniche into the neighbourhoods for 14+ tastings, we'll weave between bustling street carts, family-run eateries, specialist food shops and century-old cafΓ©s.
We'll begin with one of Alexandria's most cherished traditions. Delicate, flaky feteer arrives warm from the oven, its buttery layers begging to be torn apart and generously coated with rich tahini, sticky black molasses, wild honey, fresh cream and local Egyptian cheeses. It's the dish of champions.
The streets soon take over. In Alexandria, some of the city's best meals come on wheels rather than plates. We'll stop at beloved street carts for juicy stuffed Egyptian sausages and smoky lamb kofta, all wrapped in warm baladi. It's fast food in the truest senseβfreshly cooked, fiercely local and impossible to walk past without joining the queue.
The Mediterranean inevitably makes its presence felt. We'll sample fesikh, Alexandria's famously cured and salted grey mullet, a delicacy with roots stretching back to the time of the pharaohs. Nearby, a specialist pickle merchant offers jars bursting with brilliantly coloured vegetables, where sharp, punchy flavours provide the perfect counterpoint to Egypt's rich grilled meats.
Then comes an Alexandrian table worthy of lingering over. Charcoal-grilled pigeon, delicately spiced rice-stuffed sausages, creamy chickpea salad, smoky aubergine, bright tomato salad and silky tahini arrive together.
We'll pause inside an almost century-old cafΓ© where coffee is still poured as it has been for generations and dominoes remain as competitive as ever. Refuel before returning to warm baladi bread, perfect for scooping up earthy ful medames, vibrant al-bissara, eggs cooked richly spiced Egyptian pastrami.
No evening in Alexandria would be complete without its most beloved sandwich. Stuffed into soft bread and boldly seasoned with garlic, cumin and chilli, the city's famous beef liver sandwich has fuelled workers, students and late-night wanderers for generations.
We'll finish on a sweeter note. Fragrant semolina cake arrives alongside cool Egyptian cream before one final surprise: mastic ice cream, delicately pine-scented with the aromatic resin that has perfumed Mediterranean desserts for centuries.
As the sun sets, Alexandria's food scene comes alive. Over 14 tastings, you'll uncover the city's rich Mediterranean heritage through bustling street carts, specialist food shops, historic cafΓ©s and neighbourhood eateries that most visitors never find.
From buttery feteer with honey and cream to smoky kofta, grilled pigeon, the city's legendary beef liver sandwich and fragrant mastic ice cream, every stop reveals another chapter of Alexandria's remarkable culinary story. It's an evening of bold flavours, fascinating history and authentic local traditions that captures the city at its most delicious.
